What are Special Clouds: Define, Types, Formation & Facts

Special clouds are Mammatus clouds which are actually altocumulus, cirrus, cumulonimbus or other types of clouds that have a pouch like shapes hanging out to the bottoms. In these cases, clouds may form or grow as a consequence of certain, often localized generating factors. Orographic clouds get their shape from mountains or hills that force the air to move over or around them. The lenticular clouds are shaped like lenses or almonds. They may get their shape from hilly terrain another type of orographic cloud or just the way the air is raising over a flat terrain.

Clouds are given different names based on their shape and their height in the sky. Some clouds are near the ground. Others are almost as high as jet planes fly. Some are puffy like cotton. Others are grey and uniform. The highest clouds in the atmosphere are cirrocumulus, cirrus, and cirrostratus. Cumulonimbus clouds can also grow to be very high. Mid-level clouds include altocumulus and altostratus. The lowest clouds in the atmosphere are stratus, cumulus, and stratocumulus.

  1. Mammatus clouds: Mammatus are pouch-like structure clouds the cloud sink in the air. Which are sometimes threatening in appearance these clouds are harmless and do not mean that a storm is about to come which is a common misconception.
  2. Cirrus clouds: Cirrus cloud is one of the most individual cloud formations.  it appears as a slender and horizontal spiral of the cloud. It tends to disappear only in a minute or two after the formation and it is rarely observed.
  3. Altocumulus castellanus: Altocumulus clouds are also known as jellyfish-like appearance cloud. When the rush of air comes from the gulf streams and gets trapped between the layers of dry air. These clouds top rises into jellyfish shape and long tentacle from the raindrops that have evaporated.

 Facts about special clouds:

  1. When moist, warm air rises to a cooler elevation, and water condenses onto microscopic dust-like seeds, bacteria or ash. Air and seeds that updraft the clouds.
  2. Every planet with an atmosphere has clouds. That includes the moon.
  3. Clouds reflect the suns light, which causes them to appear white.
  4. Cumulonimbus cloud, or in English, Stormcloud, is what’s making your flight run late. It is capable of producing lightning and other dangerous severe weather, such as gusts, hail, and occasional tornadoes. It is so unpredictable that pilots never fly through them, which often causes flight delays.
  5. Big clouds are normally made up of water droplets and have a base under 2000 meters.
  6. High altitude clouds are usually made up of ice crystals, which can also serve as seeds, and have a base somewhere between 5,500 and 14,000 meters.
  7. If those crystals take on moisture, they may become too heavy for updrafts to support, which is what causes rain.
  8. So, it makes sense that shooting those so-called seeds” to clouds should make them rain out.
