Solar energy and its formation:
The energy that is formed by the heat and light of the sun is called solar energy. It is most renewable and reliable energy. It is available in plenty and free to everyone.
Presence of use of solar energy can be traced right from the ancient times by using simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into beams so that they could cause wood to catch fire. Solar energy is generally harnessed and obtained from the sun. There are two main ways to harness solar energy.
In this process, solar photovoltaic devices or solar cells are being used to convert the sun’s energy into electricity. These materials consist of electrons which are let loose by solar rays and are stimulated to travel with an electronic circuit, which then sends power to the grid or directly supply power to electric devices. These types of energy are used in solar watches, calculators or traffic signals.
Solar collector devices:
These solar collectors by absorbing the sun rays harness heat. This technique is mainly used to heat-up water for home use such as water- heaters, hot tubes and swimming pools. The solar energy which is converted into electricity can be instantly used to power lights or many other devices. Solar cells normally generate direct current (DC) type electricity.

(a) Renewable energy source
Solar energy is truly a complete renewable energy source. Harnessing of solar energy can be done in all areas of the world and is available each day. Sun is available throughout the year and is solar energy.
(b) Reduces Electricity bills
Solar energy can be used almost for every purpose like cooking through solar cooker, heating through solar heater, generation of electricity for various purposes through solar panels and many more . Thus this reduces the expenses of paying huge electricity bills as on individual can generate it at his home.
(c) Diverse Applications
A mentioned above the use of solar energy is diverse and can be used in almost every appliance.
(d) Low maintenance costs
Other than cost of initial installation solar energy system does not require much of maintenance.
LIST OF DISADVANTAGES:
Although most of the cost of installation of solar energy system is at its maintenance , but even that initial installation charges are too high to bear.
(b) Dependent on climate
Though solar energy is said to be available throughout year but it is not the case . Due to cloudy weather and rainy weather the efficiency of solar system drops. On the other hand, its efficiency is also reduced due to day and night working.
(c) Storage issues:
There are ways to store solar energy in large batteries , so that it can be used all day long, but installation of such large batteries in space consuming and even money consuming.
(d) Occupying space:
In order to generate more energy you need to install more solar panels so as to collect more of sunlight. But these solar panels requires lot of space on roof terrace.
Solar energy and pollution are generally assumed to be opposite of each other. But even this system causes pollution not after installation but before it . While manufacturing solar panels some toxic and hazardous products used during the manufacturing process of solar photovoltaic cells are capable of directly affecting the environment.
